The Woodbridge Flute Choir (WFC), directed by Debbie Gilbert and assisted by Lisa Sheldone, will celebrate Debbie Gilbert’s 10th anniversary as Artistic Director with a free performance for the community.  The concert will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 3:00PM at Haymarket Gainesville Community Library, 14870 Lightner Rd., Haymarket, VA 20169.

The concert will include some of Debbie’s favorite pieces that she has conducted over the past ten years.  “There are so many wonderful pieces that I have conducted over the past ten years including many World Premieres,” says Debbie.  Two of her favorite pieces appear on the choir’s fourth commercial CD titled “Butterfly” which was released in June 2014.  The title piece, Butterfly, composed by Russell Nadel for solo piccolo and flute choir, was inspired by the story of a family-friend’s experience with a red admiral butterfly.  In it, the butterfly is represented by a solo piccolo, performed by Woodbridge member, Tara Nadel.

The second piece from the CD that will be performed is Pontchartrain by Valerie Coleman. This melodic work is a narrative that depicts the rebuilding of New Orleans. Debbie writes, “Since I am from New Orleans this piece has special meaning for me.  It is also special to me because we performed it at the National Flute Association’s 2013 convention which was in New Orleans that year.”  It begins with a slow section describing the devastation of hurricane Katrina, followed by a traditional New Orleans ‘Second Line’ romp where the choir is transformed into a street brass band.

Other favorites that will be performed are:  Naranjada by Proust, Melange of Neumes by Stephen Lias and Insomniac Blue by Peter Senchuk.  Also included is Memories of East Tennessee by Alan Austin Scott which Debbie conducted at her first concert with the group.
