Range of Light
Nathan Nabb, saxophone
James Pitts, piano
Zach Hanks, narrator
This CD of saxophone music draws on theatre, photography, and literature for its inspiration.
Having composed music for live theatre for over ten years, Stephen Lias has created a considerable number of works that served as folk music in their original fictional settings. Imaginary Folksongs rescues six such pieces from productions such as The Tempest, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, and She Stoops to Conquer, and resets them for alto and soprano saxophone with piano.
Five Characters from David Copperfield, written in 2003, looks to literature for its inspiration. Charles Dickens’ great novel contains a cast of rich and varied personalities, five of which are illustrated by the
music of this set.
Since 2009, Stephen Lias has been writing pieces that celebrate America’s national parks. Range of Light takes this approach one step further by basing all four movements on iconic images of Yosemite National
Park by photographer Ansel Adams.
